Local area code — 01 and 02
The closest thing to a traditional landline, and the right choice if you want to look established in a particular town or city. Callers pay their standard rate and it comes out of their inclusive minutes. Allocated to order in 311 area codes.
London — 020
A 020 number reads as a London business whether or not you have a London office. Popular with consultancies and agencies serving the capital from elsewhere.
National — 0333 and 0345
Charged to callers exactly like a landline call and included in mobile bundles, but tied to no city — useful if you trade nationally or do not want to imply a location. Available to browse and buy from live stock today.
Freephone — 0800 and 0808
Free for the caller from any UK phone since 2015. Best for sales lines and helplines where you want to remove every barrier to calling. Note these do not read as a landline.
Business rate — 084 and 087
Callers pay an access charge plus a service charge, part of which can be rebated to you. Suitable for paid support lines. Not appropriate where callers may be vulnerable or the call is essential.

The 2027 Analogue Switch-Off and Your Business Number
The UK's analogue telephone network — the copper-based PSTN that traditional landlines run on — is being retired. Openreach is moving every remaining analogue line to a digital service, with the programme due to complete on 31 January 2027. If your business still answers calls on a traditional copper line, that line will be migrated or withdrawn before then, and businesses that leave it late tend to find themselves choosing a replacement in a hurry.
A virtual landline is unaffected, because there is no copper line to switch off. The number lives in the network and is delivered to whichever phone you nominate, so the analogue retirement changes nothing about how it works. If you are already weighing up what to do about an ageing business line, moving the number to a virtual landline now is the least disruptive option available: you keep the number your customers already have, you stop paying line rental, and there is nothing to rip out.

What is a virtual landline?
It is a UK phone number with no physical line behind it, forwarded to a phone you already own. The part people usually want to know: your caller cannot tell. They dial a normal local number, pay their normal rate for it, and the call simply rings wherever you have told us to send it. Because the number is not tied to a building, you keep it if you move premises, and you can take it with you if you ever leave us.
How much does a virtual landline cost?
Ours costs from £14.99 per month on the Solo package, which includes 500 inclusive minutes, and the first two months are free. The Works is £24.99 per month with 1,000 minutes, call recording, an IVR menu and three numbers. You can also buy a number outright for £497 and pay no monthly rental on it. There are no setup fees.
Is there a free way to get a virtual landline number in the UK?
Not a genuine one. Some apps give you a free number, but they are generally mobile or non-UK numbers, they are withdrawn if you stop using the app, you cannot port them away, and they do not read as a business landline. If the number is going on your website, your van or your invoices, a free number is a false economy — you do not own it and you can lose it without notice.
Do you need WiFi for a virtual landline?
No. This is the most common misunderstanding. Because calls are delivered to your ordinary mobile or landline over the normal phone network, you need nothing more than mobile signal or an existing phone line to receive them. WiFi and broadband are only required for app-based or softphone services, which this is not.
How do I get a virtual landline?

What is the cheapest virtual landline number in the UK?
We are not the cheapest, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. Entry prices of 99p to £5 exist in this market, but they usually come with a 12- or 24-month contract, a per-user charge once you add anyone, or a feature set that excludes the things most businesses actually need. Can I have calls ring more than one phone at once?
Yes. Calls can ring several phones together so whoever is free picks up, or move down a list in order if the first person does not answer. You can also send calls to different phones at different times of day, so evenings and weekends go somewhere else. All of it is configured from the online portal and you can change it whenever you like.
Is there a downside to using a virtual number?
Two honest ones. First, outbound calls leave from your own phone, so unless we configure it otherwise the recipient sees your mobile number, not your virtual landline. Second, a virtual landline is not a phone system — there are no desk extensions and no internal transfers between colleagues, so a team that needs those wants a VoIP system instead. Everything else people worry about (call quality, reliability, whether callers can tell) is not an issue, because the call is carried on the ordinary network.
Can I keep my existing business number?
Yes. We port existing UK numbers free of charge, including numbers currently on a traditional BT line. Porting normally takes a few working days. Your number keeps working throughout and switches over on an agreed date.
What does the caller pay?
On a local 01 or 02 number, the caller pays their standard rate for that area code and the call comes out of their inclusive minutes, exactly as it would to any landline. On 0333 and 0345 the same applies — these are charged as landline calls and are included in mobile bundles. On 0800 and 0808 the caller pays nothing at all. On 084 and 087 numbers the caller pays an access charge plus a service charge.
Can I keep the number if I leave Number Supermarket?
Yes. You can port the number to another provider under Ofcom's portability rules, and we will not obstruct it. If you have bought the number outright it is yours regardless.
Can a virtual landline receive text messages?
Landline and 03 numbers are voice services and are not designed to receive SMS. Some networks will convert a text to a spoken message, but it is not a reliable channel and we would not advise publishing a landline number for texts. If SMS matters to your business, tell us and we will talk you through the options.
Can I use my virtual landline from abroad?
Calls are forwarded to whichever UK mobile or landline you nominate, so the service is designed for UK-based businesses. If you travel, calls will follow your mobile and you will pay your own operator's roaming charges as normal. We do not supply numbers for people living permanently outside the UK.
Will the 2027 switch-off affect my virtual landline?
No. The switch-off retires the analogue copper network, and a virtual landline does not use it. If anything the deadline is a reason to move: bringing your existing number onto a virtual landline now means you are not scrambling for a replacement when your old line is withdrawn.
