Does the free WhatsApp Business app work with my 0800?

What is a BSP and why do I need one?
A BSP (Business Solution Provider) is a company accredited by Meta to provision phone numbers on the WhatsApp Business Platform. Examples include Sinch, Twilio, Vonage, Infobip and MessageBird. They handle the WhatsApp Business API integration, your inbox/CRM connection, and Meta-side approvals. You still own and pay Number Supermarket for the 0800 number itself; the BSP charges separately for WhatsApp messaging.
How does WhatsApp verify a freephone number?
Because 0800 numbers don't reliably receive SMS, WhatsApp uses voice-call verification. Meta calls your 0800 with a recorded 6-digit code which you enter to complete registration. The call cannot navigate an IVR menu, so during the brief verification window you'll need to route the call straight to a person (or use a BSP-provided whitelist) to capture the code. After verification, you can re-enable any IVR — Meta does not call again.
Will my customers pay to message me on WhatsApp?
No — WhatsApp messaging is free for customers on any UK mobile data plan or Wi-Fi. They pay nothing for messages, calls or media sent to your WhatsApp Business number. The business side pays Meta a small per-conversation fee (typically £0.03–£0.06 depending on conversation type — utility, marketing, authentication or service) via your chosen BSP. Many BSPs offer free user-initiated service conversations.
Can I use my 0800 for both regular WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business?
No. Each WhatsApp account (Business or personal) requires a unique phone number. Once your 0800 is registered to a WhatsApp Business Platform account it can't simultaneously be used on personal WhatsApp or the free WhatsApp Business app. The flip side is that your 0800 keeps working perfectly as a regular phone number for voice calls — WhatsApp registration does not affect call routing or anything else.
