In the recent past many callers to 0800 and 0808 telephone numbers from mobile phones have been surprised to find themselves charged for the privilege of calling these supposedly free services. However, following a change in rules dictated by telephone regulator OfCom in 2015, all calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers are now completely free of charge from both landlines and mobile telephones, whoever the service provider happens to be. This includes all calls made from BT telephones, BT currently being the UK’s largest telephone service provider.
The telecommunications regulator ruled that the cost of calling such numbers from mobile telephones in particular was often unclear with callers frequently running up considerable charges in calls to these numbers whilst believing that they were free of charge. So for all BT customers as well as users of other service providers a call to a 0800 or 0808 freephone number is now exactly that, completely free of charge from any type of telephone and at anytime of day.
